A Social Enterprise Connecting Cultural Experiences with Women’s Creative Enterprise Development

Imajine Enspire (the words are Haitian Creole) (IE) is designed as a social enterprise that works with public libraries to plan and execute business incubator programs for African and Caribbean creatives. Women artists and artisans are the primary focus, with support designed around their existing skills, cultural knowledge, business ambitions and locally identified needs. As a social enterprise based in Canada, our work connects people who desire meaningful, fun, and engaging cultural experiences and want to support a worthy cause with local artists seeking fair remuneration, greater visibility, stronger customer relationships and economic opportunity. Some of the revenue we make from curating cultural and shopping experiences in Canada at various venues including women’s social clubs, retirement homes schools, and various retail partnerships goes into funding our business incubator programs in Africa and the Caribbean. Our vision is to work with libraries in Africa and the Caribbean to make more women artists build business enterprises. Our mandate allows individuals to come together to support women artists here and abroad.

Imajine Enspire artist’s series is a wonderful opportunity for individuals to give back, support local women artists and participate in curated artistic, shopping, and cultural experiences that will allow you to engage your audiences and create value for them.

We curate lasting and compelling cultural and shopping experiences with artists through women’s social clubs and other community settings, while also developing retail partnerships that create additional pathways for artists to reach customers.

The commercial side of the organization allows us to keep the work we do in Africa and the Caribbean sustainable. We use some of the revenue from our artists series to help fund our social-impact work with artists and artisans in Africa and the Caribbean.

Our vision is for women artists and artisans to build viable, resilient enterprises that strengthen their economic independence while sustaining cultural expression on their own terms. Our mandate allows women and others to come together to support women artists here and abroad through equitable partnerships, cultural exchange and responsible purchasing.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Across Africa and the Caribbean, talented artisans create exceptional work but often lack equitable access to the finance, tailored business support, professional networks and reliable markets needed to earn sustainable incomes from their work.

Artists and artisans bring developed technical skills, creative judgement and cultural knowledge. However, enterprise growth can be constrained by factors beyond artistic ability, including limited working capital, high production and transport costs, unpaid care responsibilities and weak links to buyers.

Especially in the Global South talent comes naturally and instinctually for many artists. But there is an intellectual side to being an artist that most people are not aware of. To run a scalable and sustainable business artists must be supported, groomed, mentored and your career must be managed properly. This formula for success does not come naturally for most artists anywhere. With that being said, IE strives to offer business coaching services for artisans in Africa and the Caribbean in the form of business incubator programs and retail pop-ups in partnership with the public library and we have created a commercial revenue stream to drive our social enterprise model.

OUR MODEL

In Namibia, IE is piloting a week-long artisan business incubator for 10–15 women artisans, hosted through a public library. The pilot costs $29,000. Participants will receive practical training in business planning, marketing, financial literacy, product development, and entrepreneurship; learn from an experienced master artisan; build professional networks; and participate in a library-based retail pop-up where learning becomes market opportunity.

The library is central to the model: a trusted, accessible community space where knowledge can be transformed into opportunity. The approach brings training, mentorship, and market exposure closer to artisans who may otherwise be unable to access costly conferences, trade shows, or professional development. Namibia is the first implementation of a model designed to learn, adapt, and potentially replicate through libraries in other African and Caribbean communities. The pilot will strengthen women-led artisan businesses while supporting cultural heritage, local creative economies, and greater participation in the cultural and creative industries.

IE connects three complementary areas of work:

  1. Cultural experiences in Canada: The Imajine Enspire Artists’ Series offers women’s social clubs, retirement homes and community groups curated artistic, shopping and cultural experiences that enrich member engagement.

  2. Fair commercial opportunities for artists: Participating artists gain access to paid engagements, product sales and customer relationships through events and retail partnerships. Written agreements will clarify fees, commissions, payment schedules and rights to images and creative work.

  3. Library-based enterprise support: A defined contribution from Canadian commercial activities, supplemented initially by partner funding, will support practical business development for selected women artists and artisans in Namibia.

INVEST IN A MODEL, NOT JUST A SINGLE EVENT

We are seeking partners who want to help build a sustainable model for cultural and economic development and see this commercial model in Canada as a way to raise funds for our business development programs in Africa and the Caribbean particularly the Namibia pilot project. We also welcome women’s social clubs, retirement homes, retailers, corporations, foundations, and individuals who can provide venues, retail channels, mentorship, expertise, networks, or market connections.

We align technical insight with disciplined execution to provide measurable gains across operational, financial, and strategic domains. Our integrated methodologies streamline multifaceted workflows, enabling organizations to deploy resources efficiently and capture emerging opportunities.
